Budapest’s specialty coffee scene hasn’t lacked experimentation for a long time, yet it’s rare for a brand to arrive with a genuinely new perspective on where purity and quality intersect. Born in Kyoto, % Arabica has now landed on Király Street to show that simplicity can be extraordinary when every detail is guided by a deliberate philosophy.

With its Japanese roots, the brand has already won over design lovers and coffee enthusiasts in major cities around the world, and now it introduces Budapest to the meeting point of polished simplicity and uncompromising quality. The first Hungarian location opened at Király Street 40, within the historic walls of the former Bécsi Sörház. The building and its spacious interior pay equal homage to Budapest’s rich architectural heritage and the modern, minimalist aesthetic that defines every % Arabica store.
The story of % Arabica began in Kyoto in 2014, and today the brand spans nearly two hundred locations across the globe, from Hong Kong to the United Arab Emirates, from New York — and now to Budapest. In every store, the meeting point of Japanese minimalism and global coffee culture offers the same experience, the luxury of simplicity, where every detail feels like part of a thoughtfully constructed narrative.
Minimalism and history served in a cup
Kenneth Shoji founded the brand with a single ambition, to reveal the beauty of the world through coffee. At % Arabica, the motto “See the World Through Coffee” becomes almost literal. At first glance, the space feels more like a sleek design studio than a café, and that is precisely its charm.

The interior, envisioned by the French architecture studio Ciguë, builds on the contrast between raw brick walls and snow-white Zsolnay tiles, creating the kind of minimalist yet welcoming atmosphere the brand is known for worldwide. The original arches were preserved, the exposed brick left untouched, allowing the space’s character to fully shine through, while the counter’s modern, carefully crafted details strike a balance between tradition and contemporary design. The benches and tables subtly reference the world of Budapest’s thermal baths, and the handcrafted Zsolnay elements weave the concept gently into the city’s cultural heritage.

Every detail is deliberately composed, from the benches and single-seat tables to the counter surfaces, all reflecting the philosophy that the coffee experience is shaped not only by flavor but also by the space and the mood surrounding it.
Simple, pure, perfect – the % Arabica experience
From the very first moment, it’s clear that quality is paramount here. Atop the Zsolnay counter sits a custom Slayer machine crafted in Seattle, ensuring that every cup is prepared with precision and tailored care. The menu is intentionally concise yet impeccable: alongside classic espresso, macchiato, americano, and latte, it features two specialties – the Kyoto-style condensed milk coffee and a chocolate “dark” edition – as well as freshly ground pour-over coffees, matcha latte, and pure, uncomplicated flavors that follow the Japanese “less is more” philosophy. The coffee’s creaminess and depth captivate immediately, delivering a taste experience that exceeds every expectation.

Alongside the coffee, the pastries are carefully selected. Whether you crave a flaky croissant or a sweet cinnamon bun, you’ll find them here, and fresh sandwiches are also on offer for visitors. Our personal favorite is the almond croissant, whose gentle sweetness perfectly complements the rich, layered flavors of the coffee.

The philosophy behind the coffee beans

% Arabica’s iconic logo is one of the simplest yet most expressive design elements in the specialty coffee world. The two dots and the diagonal line are more than just a shorthand for the brand’s name—they carry symbolic meaning: the dots evoke coffee cherries, while the line represents the branches, referencing the natural source from which every coffee originates. This visual simplicity perfectly reflects the brand’s commitment to natural elegance and harmonious proportions.

Roasted on site, world-class quality
The true gem of the Király Street location is its on-site roastery, a rare feature among city cafés. Behind the counter, ten varieties of coffee beans from iconic growing regions around the world—Brazil, Guatemala, Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Colombia—are lined up, each offering a unique flavor profile. The beans are roasted on-site and can be freshly ground to order, tailored to how each guest prefers to brew their coffee at home.

This kind of personalized experience is one of % Arabica’s greatest strengths. Guests don’t just taste the coffee, they can watch almost up close as each cup is crafted, seeing firsthand the journey from bean to their cup.

During the holiday season, % Arabica is bringing a special seasonal experience: from November 14 to January 1, 2025,

It’s worth trying the brand’s iconic Kyoto Latte, crafted from a double ristretto shot, steamed milk, and a touch of condensed milk, creating a softly creamy, balanced, and subtly sweet experience. The Dark Latte specialty is made with premium French cocoa, offering a rich, deep flavor while the creaminess harmoniously balances the coffee’s bold character. For an extra festive touch, pairing your coffee with % Arabica’s gingerbread treats adds the perfect seasonal complement to the premium coffee experience.

% Arabica Budapest is at once international and local, restrained yet full of character, disciplined in Japanese style and vibrantly alive in a Budapest way. The meeting of Japanese roots and Hungarian artisanal details has created a space where design and flavor, tradition and contemporary vision engage in a genuine dialogue. Whether it’s a quick morning coffee, a long afternoon pause, or finding the perfect gift for a coffee-loving friend, this is the place to be. It’s a pleasure to see % Arabica finally feel at home in Budapest!
